What to Make and Sell

Some categories are genuinely viable. Others are far more crowded than the tutorials suggest.

Heads up: Mat & Blade earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which products we recommend or how we rank them. Read the full disclosure.

Personalized items sell; generic ones compete with factories. A name, a date, a team, an inside joke — those are things a buyer cannot get from a large retailer, and they are where a small maker has a genuine advantage. Generic designs put you against manufacturers on price, which is not a contest worth entering.

How we picked

We assess categories by whether a small maker has a structural advantage in them, rather than by what looks appealing to make. The material recommendations follow from that: when you are selling, durability specifications become product specifications. Our methodology.

The materials that matter when selling

A vinyl decal being applied to a car window

1. Best for decals and signage

Oracal 651 Permanent Vinyl

Oracal · Currently sold · Verified 2026-09-27

Outdoor-rated permanent vinyl is what makes a sellable decal rather than one that lifts in a season. If you are selling car decals or outdoor signage, the material's durability rating is a product specification rather than a preference, and buyers notice when it is wrong.

What works

  • The reference permanent vinyl — settings and behavior are documented everywhere
  • Genuinely weather-resistant, which most craft-store vinyl is not
  • Wide color range and readily available by the roll

What does not

  • Permanent means permanent — removing it from paint or a wall can take finish with it
  • Gloss finish is not what you want on a wall quote
  • Not for fabric under any circumstances

Not for you if

You are decorating a rented wall. Use removable 631 instead and keep your deposit.

Heat transfer vinyl lettering laid out on a shirt before pressing

2. Best for apparel

Siser EasyWeed HTV

Siser · Currently sold · Verified 2026-09-27

Consistency matters more when you are selling than when you are making for yourself, because a design that fails after three washes is a refund. A material with published settings and predictable weeding is what makes a repeatable product.

What works

  • Weeds more cleanly than almost anything else at this price
  • Thin enough that a layered design does not feel like a plastic patch
  • Siser publishes clear time and temperature guidance for it
  • Sold in single sheets, so you can try three colors without buying three rolls

What does not

  • Matte only — no gloss, glitter or specialty finish in the base line
  • Sheets cost more per square inch than buying a roll
  • Still needs real heat and pressure; a household iron gives mixed results

Not for you if

You want a glitter or holographic finish. That is a different Siser product line, not EasyWeed.

Vinyl stickers arranged on a laptop lid

3. Best for printed stickers

Printable Sticker Paper

Various · Currently sold · Verified 2026-09-27

Waterproof printable vinyl rather than paper sticker sheets. A buyer's first sticker going tacky in the rain ends the relationship, and the cost difference per sheet is small against that.

What works

  • The only way to make full-color stickers on a craft machine
  • Waterproof printable vinyl holds up to real use
  • Cheap per sheet once you gang designs up

What does not

  • Paper-based sticker sheets run when wet unless sealed
  • Print-then-cut registration needs decent lighting to scan reliably
  • The Joy 2 cannot do print-then-cut at all

Not for you if

Your machine has no print-then-cut. Cut solid-color vinyl decals instead.

A stack of folded blank t-shirts

4. Best for the largest cost in apparel

Cotton Blank T-Shirts

Various · Currently sold · Verified 2026-09-27

For anyone selling shirts, blanks dominate the cost per item by a wide margin. Buying in multi-packs is where the margin actually comes from — not in the vinyl.

What works

  • Any color works, which sublimation cannot claim
  • Soft and familiar to wear
  • Cheap in multi-packs, so practice is affordable

What does not

  • Cotton will not take sublimation ink at all
  • Very heavy or textured cotton gives uneven HTV adhesion
  • Needs a pre-press to drive out moisture before the design goes on

Not for you if

You are sublimating. Sublimation needs polyester, and cotton simply will not hold the ink.

A plain stainless steel tumbler on a neutral surface

5. Best for higher-value drinkware

Sublimation Tumbler Blanks

Various · Currently sold · Verified 2026-09-27

Coated tumblers support a higher price point than a vinyl-decorated one and look genuinely manufactured. They need a sublimation setup, so this is a step up rather than a starting point.

What works

  • The coating makes color come out bright and sharp
  • Very forgiving of small timing errors
  • Sold in cheap multi-packs so practice costs little

What does not

  • Must be sublimation-specific — an ordinary tumbler will not take the ink
  • Needs a tumbler press or an oven; a flat press cannot do it
  • Not dishwasher-proof in practice, whatever the listing says

Not for you if

You only have a flat heat press. A flat plate cannot wrap a tumbler evenly.

The honest economics

Material cost is rarely the issue. The vinyl on a shirt is a small fraction of what the shirt costs, and a decal's material cost is close to negligible. Two other things determine whether this works.

Your time. A personalized item takes design time, cutting time, weeding time, pressing time and packing time. Weeding especially — a detailed design can take longer than everything else combined. If you price by material cost plus a small markup, you are working for very little, and this is the single most common mistake people make when they start selling.

Blanks. For apparel and drinkware, the blank dominates cost per item. Margin comes from buying blanks well rather than from saving on vinyl.

Sports teams, brands, characters, films and slogans are frequently trademarked, and selling merchandise using them without a license is infringement. This is widely done and widely ignored, right up until it is not.

The practical rule: if you recognize the phrase, logo or character from somewhere commercial, assume someone owns it. Original designs and genuine personalization — a person's own name, a family date, a local reference — carry none of this risk.

Before you list anything

  1. Make it and use it yourself for a month. A shirt through five washes, a tumbler through daily use, a decal through a season. You want to discover the failure mode before a customer does.
  2. Work out your true time per item, including weeding and packing, and price accordingly.
  3. Check the license on every design file and font.
  4. Get your process repeatable. Write down the settings that worked. A product is something you can make identically twice.
  5. Sort out packaging and shipping before listing rather than after the first order.

Which equipment actually pays for itself

If you are selling apparel, a clamshell press with repeatable clamp pressure is the upgrade that matters — an under-pressed design looks fine and fails on the third wash, which is a refund and a bad review rather than a minor annoyance.

Beyond that, more cut width lets you gang up more per pass, which matters once batch size is the constraint. The Venture exists for exactly that and is worth considering only when you can point at the batch that is currently taking too long.

Common questions

What sells best with a Cricut?
Personalized items — names, dates, teams, events. Those cannot be mass-produced, which is where a small maker has a structural advantage over a factory.
Can you make money with a Cricut?
Yes, at modest volumes in the right categories. The limiting factor is usually time per item rather than material cost, so pricing for your labor is what decides whether it works.
Do I need a license to sell Cricut designs?
You need commercial-use rights for the specific design files and fonts you use. Licenses vary between purchased files, free downloads and subscription libraries — check each one.
Can I sell shirts with sports team logos?
Not without a license. Teams, brands and characters are typically trademarked, and selling merchandise using them is infringement.
What is the biggest mistake when selling Cricut products?
Pricing on material cost and ignoring time. A detailed design can take longer to weed than everything else combined.

How we picked

We verify every product is currently sold by reading the manufacturer's own catalog, compare published specifications rather than marketing copy, and rank on what a first-time buyer has to decide. We do not run lab tests and we do not claim to, and commission never affects the order.
