Decoding the labels

Craft-store packaging rarely uses the industry codes, which is why this category confuses people. Two numbers unlock most of it.

• 651 — permanent, gloss, solvent-based adhesive, rated for years outdoors. The professional standard for decals and signage.
• 631 — removable, matte, low-tack adhesive, indoor use. The professional standard for wall graphics.
• Craft-store 'permanent' — usually comparable in intent, often rated for a shorter outdoor life. Check the packaging for a stated durability figure rather than assuming.
• 'Smart' vinyl — a Cricut format that cuts without a mat on current machines. It is a format, not a different adhesive class; it still comes as permanent or removable.

What else you need for decals

Transfer tape, a weeding hook, and a scraper. The tape lifts the weeded design off its backing so the spacing survives the move; the hook removes the waste; the scraper burnishes the tape down and then burnishes the decal onto its surface. Together they cost very little and they are the difference between a clean application and a crooked one.
